To Wax Or Not To Wax

That is the question. This post has nothing to do with infertility. It's prompted as a result of all the people who get to look at my girly parts because of infertility.

I'm wondering if it is commonplace to have the entire pubic area waxed. I know people have different views on this, but what do you think is proper etiquette? I mean for those of us that have to drop our pants weekly (and sometimes even daily)? Would it be better to be completely bald or is nicely trimmed and shaven enough?

I can't help but wonder how my vag stacks up to the lady sitting next to me in the RE's office. Does anyone else do this??? Or am I crazy???

I'm pretty scared to have a full wax - by full, I mean brazilian. Fertile friends have said it hurts, but in comparison to what? I suffer through daily injections and approximately 25 acupuncture needles twice a week. I've had the dreaded HSG test, endo biopsies, and sonohistograms. Catheters have been threaded through my cervix into my ute and the magical wand has been jim jammed inside my vaginal canal too many times to count. So how is the pain compared to that? I only trust what you, my fellow IF sisters, have to say.

So what are your thoughts? Bald eagle or not necessary?

  1. not necessary!
It is my own opinion, but I don't think they care, as long as you are neat and smell ok. Everyone who uses the wand on me is super-fast and looks only long enough to make sure it is in the right position.
I, personally, wouldn't want to be bald eagle/etc and have them really see everything.

  2. I worry about this too! One thing I actually freaked out about when I almost got a same-day appointment last week was that I wasn't cleaned up enough down there, lol. I don't think I could go bald eagle (sounds painful and I think they would be all up on my vag way more than any medical person at the RE -- yikes!), I think neat & trimmed is sufficient :)

  3. The things we worry about! :o) So....I think it does not matter to the docs or nurses....they've seen it all! Like someone else said, as long as you're clean, that is all that matters. However, I have wondered and thought the same things.....DH and I even discussed it! LOL

So, about the pain? Well, honesty here, it hurts like hell but only for a brief sec or 2 (the worst is the "top"). Like ripping a really stuck band-aid off your arm. The key is an experienced estitician. They can make it a horrible experience or as easy as cake!

    GL with your decision!!

  4. While I don't think the Brazilian is necessary for IF (trim and shave is perfectly acceptable), it is completely awesome. No, it doesn't hurt that bad, but it does hurt. Ditto Angie that the top hurts the most.

Also, as an FYI, the Brazilian is now illegal in NJ. Not officially banned yet, but on the books as illegal which I think is completely hillarious. Economy's a mess, we're at war, the top priority is obviously banning waxing techniques.

  5. Oh Erica, you make me laugh! (Which feels good at this point!) My sister used to go bald eagle 'cause she was a pageant queen in college. (I am a polar opposite. I wear make-up two to three times a year. haha) She didn't wax though, she shaved. She said the "bumps" you get when you shave the bikini area stop forming after a few shaves, but I'm not convinced! I personally prefer neatly trimmed. I found the BEST razor last week too! It's a Quatro one, but on one end there's a regular razor, on the other end, an electric trimmer. It can be adjusted to 3 lengths, and it's bikini-sized so you can get "all up in there."

As far as waxing, I have only tried Nad's. Never been to a real waxer. But if it feels anything like the Nad's, no thanks!

Yes, I stress about this too, especially since Dr. Wonderful is a total babe.

  6. Well, I have just been waxed for my retrieval tomorrow. I go for a modified Brazilian, I guess that would be the best way to describe it. I am left with a pretty wide landing strip, as I just don't want to be completely bald. My waxer is amazing - my husband does it. Seriously! We use a hard wax that doesn't involve any strips and make sure to oil my skin well before. It hurts, but it really isn't that bad. I really like the clean feeling it gives me.

Do what you are comfortable with. But the pain isn't that bad so no need to let that part stop you!

I was stressing this morning that I had some stubble growing back, so my husband took care of it.

It is amazing the things that we think about with all of this.

I am ready for retrieval, I am freshly waxed and I have great SOCKS!!

  7. This post is awesome. :)

I think about that too, but figure that whatever I think about my own girlie-parts, if your job is to look at them every day you MUST have seen worse...

In terms of waxing, I am waxed periodically, though I don't go full on brazilian. Depending on who's 'naming' it, my preference is between a very thorough regular wax and a "partial brazilian" (the last wax I got before my vacation the girl told me this). My hair grows very quickly (everywhere- including on my head) so I'd have to shave every day to keep it the way I'd like.

It hurts- more than the injections I've had but less than my HSG. But for me it's worth it, especially since the shave tends to give me razor burn and the wax lasts longer. :)

  8. I have done shaving, bikini waxing and full-on sugaring for a brazilian. Waxing and sugaring are far superior to shaving and the hair grows back much slower and not as thick.

The pain can be intense - but it is temporary and well worth it!

  9. I would just say a shave and neat trim!

  10. I think it's nice to have a tidy garden.

I wouldn't think a full Brazilian would be necessary though. I've had one of those before and it hurt a bit, but was ok.

Hehe, cool topic, I do worry about this - there have been too many Dr's in my "area" for my liking.

  11. Hehe you are so not the only person that thinks about this.

I think at the very least trim it up, I'm in favour of a relatively classy brazilian but you don't want to be too porno!

They honstly hurt less the more you have them, and as someone else has said, get recommendations for a good waxer because she will make all the difference to the experience.

  12. ha ha. i was going to say what jacki said: about it being illegal in NJ. how funny! :)

  13. LOL - I'm sure this is a question many women have, but many wouldn't have the guts to put it on their blog! (I know I wouldn't!!) So kudos to you for that!!

I think the doctors / nurses have seen it all. And I really think they are beyond caring. I personally believe in being trimmed and clean. Although I've heard of the entire spectrum - some women like to be totally waxed / shaved, some like to go au naturale.

    Good post!

  14. HA! It cracks me up that we all have these thoughts -- thank goodness for the blogs! I think you're fine either way you go -- they've definitely seen it all!

  15. Funny you mention this, I was just talking to hubby about this, not for IF reasons but just in general that I was thinking about doing it, but I am a wimp when it comes to pain, lol.

  16. I love you Erica. You totally crack me up! I have actually thought about these issues too. I go for a neat and tidy approach, but I'm sure that the the REs don't care at all! I'll have to ask my insider friend who works at the fertility clinic whether they even notice. I'll let you know!

  17. Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous!

I have definitely thought about this. I shave and trim... though was into waxing around my wedding. In someways, I think shaved legs are equally important when doing ultrasounds, retrievals and transfers-- that is where the doctors and nurses are really close to. Since I am a pasty legged thing and have dark hair, it is not a pretty sight if I let it go.

Thank you for this post. It made me smile!

  18. Love this post! I too go through the same thoughts. It is totally up to you. I do a modified brazilian as well. Not completely bald eagle. I am actually getting waxed on Tuesday. Go for the gusto if you never have!

  19. For the doctors? good lord, nothing is necessary. But for yourself, I'ma brazilian girl myself and I love it.

  20. My philosophy is that for all I am paying the doctors they can look at my hoo-hah however it is (assuming it is clean... although with progesterone suppositories and CD3 scans I can't exactly guarantee it).

  21. Ha, this is too funny and I think we've all thought about it more than once! I say, go with whatever you're comfortable with! :)

  22. Great post. I've wondered the same thing. I've done brazilian a couple of times. personally, i find it excruciating, but i love the results. usually, though, i just shave and try to keep things as nice and neat as possible (and hope that my RE has seen worse!)

  23. I trim, personally. Have never waxed, but secretly am dying to do so!

Congrats on the new Jimmy Choo arrival: I'm jealous! :)

  24. I just wanted to say thanks for such an honest (and hysterical!) post - I literally couldn't respond because I was laughing too hard.
P.S. the wax is totally worth it ;-)

  25. Um, yes I have wondered those same things, but naturally I assume that mine looks prettier than the next girl's! ;) I say go for it. The week prior to my vacation to Mexico I lost my waxing virginity and did the Brazilian. Honestly it really wasn't bad at all. I'm actually thinking of scheduling another one in a couple of weeks. I did the Brazilian, but requested that she leave a small landing strip on top. I've done the bald look and have to admit it makes me feel a bit dirty. Good luck!
