This Goddamn UTI...

...is STILL here. After taking the new medication for 5 days, I noticed blood again in my urine. I called the OB - I went in. They found high levels of blood STILL in my urine. They prescribed a Level C (not ideal for pregnancy) med called Cip.ro. Ever heard of it? Supposedly it will "knock it right out." Really? Because I feel like I've heard that before.

I called my good old fertility specialist (love them still) and the head doc there said to take it. He said it's more important to clear this up as the alternative could lead to a miscarriage. Fanfuckingtastic! My mother-in-law is a nurse and works closely with my primary doctor. She involved him and he's also looking over the culture results. He called a perinatologist friend of his who said I should take it. Side note which she decided to tell me - I'm not sure why...I thought she knew me better than this...apparently Cip.ro can cause cartilage damage in fetuses. Oh goodie. Now I can add that to my plate of worry.

And the numbing hands are now keeping me awake for most of the night. Why did I think I would have an easy time in pregnancy? Did I think that the universe might give me a fucking break because I had such a hard time getting here? Shit. I did. Note to self: The universe has nothing to do with our measly little lives on Earth.

  2. That sucks.....seriously. Everything I've heard says that it is better to take the medication than deal w/ an infection. Not that you were waiting for my opinion :) You should get a free pass to the end....all pregnancy glow and no pain.

  3. Erica- you already heard from me once, but it sounds like you have done your homework and everyone agrees, the infection is worse than the Rx....praying this clears it up and the rest of the pregnancy goes smooth! ((hugs))

  4. Well, fu*k that really sucks. I am so sorry. I hope that it truly does knock it right out. I hear on on being freaked out about taking anything, I get like that too. I agree with strongblonde - it will be a quick thing. Good luck.

  5. I agree, take the medication, the odds of it hurting the babies are very low. I know exactly how you feel, the universe isn't doing me any favors either. Shouldn't all infertiles have an easy pregnancy? Haven't we suffered enough? Guess not.

  6. Wow, Thats scary. I'm sorry to hear that you have to take that but at the same time If its better than the alternative than take it for sure. I know its impossible but try not the focus on all the bad side effects that can happen. Prayers for you.

  7. I'm a long time reader (and lurker!) and have never commented.....until now. =)

Have you heard of a product called D-Mannose? It's a natural sugar (our bodies produce it in small quantities) that, instead of killing the UTI bacteria, it icauses the bacteria to "slip" off the bladder walls and pass through your urine. It's safe for diabetics, in that the sugar is immediately processed by the kidneys, instead of accumulating in the blood stream. I'm almost positive it's safe for pregnant women. You can find it at most health food stores.

I used to suffer from frequent UTIs, and just became so fed up with the antibiotics. D-Mannose has been my flippin' savior! In case you're interested, here's a link: http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-D-Mannose-500-mg-120-Capsules/525?at=0

I know this must sound like mubo jumbo, but this stuff *seriously* works.

I REALLY hope that you get better soon! I know how terrifying and frustrating this must be for you. *hugs*

  8. So sorry. If you had never had the fucking IF, you probably wouldn't think twice about it, either. I don't know, maybe you would, but the IF definitely makes everything worse, doesn't it?

Feel better, take the meds, look into that crunchy-granola stuff Meg recommends, love you.

  9. I'm so sorry for the drama and worry! I've actually done a round of Ci.pro, a couple of years back, and it does knock everything down VERY quickly. I don't really remember any bad side effects. Actually, I took it for a post-Mexico bout of e-coli and my friend who was travelling with me also got sick and had to take the meds, and she was 5 months pregnant. Didn't effect her or the baby at all, except to get rid of the sickness.

Crossing my fingers this all works for you and the rest of the pregnancy is worry free!!

  12. Hang in there Erica...you've been through the rough stuff before, so I know you'll come out on top again.

As for the meds, whatever you need to do to get healthy for those boys!

    Have a nice weekend!

  13. I'm so sorry that you have another thing to worry about. I hope that if you take the cipro that you won't be on it for long and that your infection goes away. I can't wait until you are holding your baby boys in your arms:)

  14. Oh, I'm so sorry. The discomfort of a UTI on top of the worries of a pregnant (formerly) infertile. It's too much! :( Cipro is one of the strongest antibiotics. I hope it does knock it out fast so you don't have to take it very long!

  15. That particular antibiotic is the ONLY one that will clear up a UTI for me. It does work really well. Just STAY OUT OF THE SUN! It'll say that on the warning label and they are NOT kidding. It'll give you a HORRIBLE metallic taste in your mouth if you're in the sun too long. You'll get a kick ass tan, but it's SO not worth it! Also, drink cranberry and blueberry juice, eat lots of yogurt and you can drink acidopholis milk. Those always knock out my UTI's as well.

I hope it goes away soon and you can go back to having a fairly "normal" pregnancy.
    *HUGS*
